Advice for choosing Advanced Higher subjects

Help available! We run this FREE regular webinar to help you with subject choices

There are lots of subjects that would work well for the two Advanced Higher subjects you'll take alongside Geography. A Geography degree can be approached from an arts, sciences or social sciences background, depending on your interests.

If you have the choice (and we realise you don't always!), our advice is that English, History, languages, sciences  (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), and Mathematics are all very useful Advanced Higher courses to consider, and though none of these are a requirement for Geography applications, choosing at least one of these would be a very safe option, with the extra benefit of helping you to to keep your options open, as they provide an excellent foundation for a range of Arts, Social Science and Humanities courses if you later change your mind about applying for Geography!

Other good choices include an additional language, Classical Studies, Computing Science, Economics, Mathematics of Mechanics, Modern Studies, Music, Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies, Sociology or Statistics.

You may also like to consider the balance of essay skills and maths/science in your Advanced Higher choices - if you are talented in both areas it may be worth picking subjects that will enable you to develop the full range of skills -  this can strengthen a Geography application as it is such a broad degree. One thing we can promise you: when you start your degree, you will find that the other students have studied Geography Advanced Higher or equivalent alongside a wide range of other subjects!

Christ's Applicants from Scotland / Geography at Christ's

I’ve never found distance from home to be a massive issue for me: because the terms are short (there are three eight-week terms), I am always so busy that I don’t have time to be homesick! And the breaks are long (around five to six weeks) so you can spend plenty of time at home during the year anyway.
