This page is part of the Christ's applicants from Scotland section.

We welcome applications from students in the Scottish SQA qualification system who would like to apply for Architecture at Christ's. We define our offers individually, but for students in the scottish system, the typical offer for Architecture is A1, A2, A2 in three Advanced Highers.

Advice for choosing Advanced Higher subjects

Subject Matters poster
Help available! We run this FREE regular webinar to help you with subject choices

We expect you to have a combination of both essay subjects and sciences/maths subjects. We want to see your enthusiasm for both arts and sciences, and a creative ability to represent the world in a variety of ways. You should be able to draw in various media and make objects (sculptures, installations, models) using different materials and techniques. We also look for an interest in the history of art and architecture.

In S5 it would be useful to take Mathematics or Physics amongst your Scottish Higher subjects.

In S6, although there are no required subjects, it is desirable to take Advanced Higher Art and Design as one of your three Advanced Highers.

  • If you don’t have a formal qualification in Art, we can consider you as long as you are doing plenty of artwork in your spare time. Please be aware that your drawing skills will be assessed during the admissions process, so you will need to make sure that these are of a high standard.

Other good Advanced Higher choices that you could combine with Art and Design include Mathematics, Classical Studies, Computing Science, Economics, English, Geography, History, a language, Mathematics of Mechanics, Modern Studies, Music, Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies, a science subject (Biology, Chemistry or Physics), Sociology or Statistics.

We recommend attending our regular webinar on choosing subjects if you can, and of course, please feel free to send us an email if you have questions about your choices.

Examples of your artwork: 6-page pdf and portfolio

If you apply for Architecture then shortly after you apply, you will be asked to upload a 6-page pdf of examples of your own original artwork (you select examples that you feel accurately reflect your abilities and interests). The deadline for this artwork is normally in early November. Then, if you are later selected for interviews, you will also need to show a portfolio in your interviews. Further detail about these requirements is available on the Architecture page.

Next steps

Please read our Architecture page thoroughly, including detailed profiles by some of our students, information about what the application process involves and resources for developing your interest and relevant skills.

As well as the Architecture subject meetings on Zoom in the Christ's Online Open Days (October of S5, February of S5, or September of S6), events with Architecture content include the University open day online or in person in July of S5, and look out for any Architecture masterclasses as well.

Please don't worry if your school is not able to provide support for your application to Cambridge, as we provide support directly via our ongoing support emails and events in the lead up to application, our UK application support pages and our current applicants section.
