Dr Mathew Horrocks, Junior Research Fellow at Christ's from 2016-18, has been named winner of the Royal Society of Chemistry's Joseph Black Award. 

Mathew was born and brougt up in Halifax, West Yorkshire, before studying Chemistry at Oriel College, University of Oxford.  Following this he moved to the University of Cambridge to work with Christ's Fellow Professor Sir David Klenerman, developing microscopy techniques to study the processes involved in neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease.

Following a brief stint researching in New South Wales, Australia, Mathew returned to Cambridge in 2016 to take up a Junior Research Fellowship at Christ's and work with Dr. Ragnhildur Thóra Káradóttir in the Stem Cell Institute, and Dr. Steven F. Lee in the Department of Chemistry in the University of Cambridge. His research involved developing and using super-resolution microscopy techniques to understand the role of white matter in brain function, and in Alzheimer’s disease.  In 2018 Mathew left Cambridge to take up a position in the Chemistry Department of the University of Edinburgh.

After receiving the prize, he said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have received the Joseph Black Award. It's a huge honour to have my work and that of my research group recognised.”
