Christ's Fellow Dr Chuck Witt has been named as an investigator on a Critical Mass Grant to Theory of Condensed Matter that has been awarded by The Engineering and Physical Sciences Council (EPSRC).

Chuck says "Condensed matter theorists study the physics of solids and much more, answering fundamental questions such as how heat and electricity are conducted at the nanoscale. Cambridge has a long tradition of pioneering research in this area - many techniques in use across the world were developed or refined here. My research produces software for simulating the behavior of electrons and/or atoms, giving first-principles explanations for material properties, both ordinary and exotic. This grant will sustain several related streams of research, emphasizing collaboration across University departments. We expect it will lead to better understanding of foundational principles, as well as support the development of new materials and technologies".
