The Faculty of History and Christ’s College invite applications for a three-year fixed term Fellowship, as part of the Isaac Newton Trust’s Academic Career Development Fellowship programme. The Fellow will contribute to research and teaching in the Faculty and College, specialising in Latin American History. For one third of their time, the Fellow will develop and pursue their own research projects within this field. The proposed start date of the position is October 2025.
The Fellow will take on a teaching load across undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes in the Faculty, as appropriate to their area of specialism. In the first year of employment, we expect the appointee to contribute to the IB Topics paper (T17: Modern Latin America: 1780 to the Present) and to create a new IA Sources paper, From the second year of employment, we hope that the postholder will introduce a new Part II Advanced Topic paper in Latin American History.

In addition, the appointee will supervise undergraduate and MPhil dissertations in their field. They may also be asked to contribute to the teaching of postgraduate classes in the Faculty. They will be expected to participate in the research seminar in World History which meets regularly during termtime, and/or other Faculty seminars. One third of the Fellow’s workload will be dedicated to College teaching. This will include supervision of undergraduate papers in ‘Historical Thinking’.
Key Responsibilities
The purpose of the Fellowship, co-funded by the Isaac Newton Trust, the History Faculty, and Christ’s College through the Glenfield Trust, is to support and maintain the Collegiate University’s international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The Fellow will develop an independent research profile, furthering their postdoctoral projects and enhancing their publication records. The Fellow will develop a portfolio of skills in teaching at undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels, including a mix of supervisions, seminars and lectures as part of their overall contribution to the Faculty and College.
Research and Scholarship (40%)
- develop research objectives for own research;
- conduct individual (and potentially collaborative) research projects;
- produce high-quality research publications
- prepare grant applications for future research
Teaching and other duties in the Faculty (30%)
- plan and deliver lectures and classes;
- provide supervision/instruction to undergraduate and taught postgraduate students;
- participate in and facilitate research seminars for postgraduate students
- contribute to administration and committee work
College-Based Duties as will be set out in a separate contract (30%)
- deliver 80 hours of undergraduate supervisions as required by the College;
- support students by assisting the Director of Studies and providing cover for colleagues;
- contribute to outreach activities;
- interview undergraduate applicants for History and the joint-degrees;
- as a College Fellow, attend Governing Body meetings (twice a Term);
- contribute to the College community by participating in research-related activities and events planned for Fellows, postgraduates, and postdoctoral members of the College;
- support the students’ History and Politics societies;
- liaise with the pastoral team in the College for students in academic difficulty, as needed.
Eligible candidates will have fewer than three years’ experience post-PhD/equivalent, exclusive of any career breaks.
Salary: £37,174 - £45,413 per annum
