Neil Gaiman’s Season of Mists (1992) is the fourth installment in his densely mythological series of graphic novels, The Sandman. It takes its title from the opening line of John Keats’ ‘Ode to Autumn’, but Milton is the dominating literary presence behind it. The story focuses on Morpheus, who must travel to Hell in order to release his former lover. On arriving he finds Lucifer busy shutting down the infernal realm, intending to leave it forever. In an intriguing retelling of Book II of Paradise Lost, Lucifer hands over to Morpheus the burdensome key to Hell’s gate. The series ends with Lucifer sitting on an Australian beach, reluctantly admiring God's sunset.
