A Christ’s education can be an inspiring and transformational experience, opening up a world of opportunities to our students during their time at College and after they graduate.
Leaving an unrestricted gift to Christ’s allows us the flexibility to respond to the area of greatest need at any given time, whether that be supporting world-changing research, providing more in the way of student welfare, or protecting and enhancing the College’s physical environment.
The Spyrou-Lintott Scholarship is just one example of how much legacies can achieve across the board.
The Spyrou-Lintott Scholarship
The Spyrou-Lintott Scholarship is named for two great friends who met at Christ's College.
George Spyrou came to Christ’s in 1971 to read for an LLM, after gaining a BA from Harvard earlier that year. He studied under many leading practitioners including Mr David Yale and Professor Sir Elihu Lauterpacht and had a strong interest in international law. He made lifelong friends with some of his fellow students and was a strong supporter of the College until his early death in 2010, serving as a member of the US Campaign Board during the College’s Quincentenary Fundraising Campaign. When George died in 2010, his friends and family donated to raise money for a scholarship in his memory.
Tim Lintott also matriculated at Christ's in 1971 to read Law. As well as succeeding in his academic work, he was a talented rugby player, gaining his Blue and becoming a member of the Hawks' Club. Some of his happiest moments were at Christ’s, whether that was during his time as a student, or in the ways that he engaged with the College after he left, becoming a member of the College’s Development Board and a Year Group Representative. In 2017, he was elected as a Lady Margaret Beaufort Fellow of the College in recognition of his support. Tim was the driving force behind the Spyrou Scholarship, and when he died in 2022, he generously left a legacy gift to continue supporting it. In honour of his contribution and of George and Tim’s longstanding friendship, it has now been renamed the Spyrou-Lintott Scholarship.
The Spyrou-Lintott Scholarship funds one student reading for the LLM per year, and since the award was first awarded in 2013, there have been twelve Spyrou-Lintott scholars, who along with the donors, have formed a strong and supportive community. Each year there is a dinner for the donors and previous and current scholars to meet each other, and they even stay in touch between dinners with a shared WhatsApp group.
