Christ’s is a green College, committed to reaching carbon neutrality before the University’s target of 2048 and prioritising a sense of care and responsibility for our environment and our historic buildings.

Capital investment

We are engaged in a programme of works which will enable a greener, sustainable future for Christ’s. This includes redeveloping and removing all gas from  the kitchens as part of the Library and Upper Hall project, installing solar panels and smart radiator valves across the estate, and completing the refurbishment of College Hostels on Jesus Lane to be better insulated and sustainably powered. Our works in First Court continue with completion of the roofing, insulation and services work which will prepare for a new generation of sustainable heating and will conclude with a long overdue refurbishment of the Chapel interior, the Porters’ Lodge, Muniments Room and adjacent exhibition space. Together, this requires almost £16m of investment over the next five years.

Academic Focus

Colleges offer unique opportunities to foster inter-disciplinary collaboration and conversation. We will therefore go beyond physical improvements by making a concerted contribution to academic research and practical action in this area through newly endowed PhD studentships in Climate Change and Net Zero and Climate Change and Sustainability. A five-year pilot Darwin-Hamied Centre for Biodiversity and Demography will comprise two Senior Research Fellows and two PhD students.

Buildings Fund

Gifts to our Buildings Fund will ensure that we provide an environment in which our students, Fellows and staff can achieve their very best work. They will support all our carbon-zero and conservation focused work across the domus site and beyond, ensuring that we are responsible stewards of the historic buildings which form the heart of our beautiful site.

Research Fund

Gifts to our Research Fund will help secure the future of the Junior Research Fellowship programme, investing in the future of world-leading research and teaching. They will also support College-based research into urgent, important and fast-changing areas, such as biodiversity and climate change.

General Annual Fund

Gifts to our General Annual Fund will allow us to prioritise expenditure, channelling resources where they are needed most urgently needed.
