Malina’s research interests are supercapacitors for energy storage and carbon capture. She obtained her PhD from the University of Leoben, Austria, where she developed and applied operando X-ray and neutron techniques to better understand how these energy storage devices work at the molecular level.
While supercapacitors are traditionally used to store electrical energy, they can also be used to capture CO2 through a process known as supercapacitive swing adsorption. However, many of the fundamental mechanisms underlying this emerging climate change mitigation technology remain poorly understood. Malina's research focuses on establishing this missing mechanistic understanding, providing the foundation for improving supercapacitors for CO2 capture and supporting their development as a viable carbon capture technology.
