Dr Damon Wischik

Damon Wischik is a Lecturer in the computer science department. His main research interest is in how machine learning can be used to enhance our scientific understanding of the world. How should science work, when computers can learn much more accurate models than humans can? At the theoretical end, he is developing machine learning approaches that can give answers about uncertainty and about causation. At the practical end, he has worked in applied modelling and statistics in areas such as medicine, climate science, transport, and communications. He was previously a researcher in the maths department at Cambridge from 2000-2005, and in the computer science department in UCL from 2005-2011, and chief data scientist at a Silicon Valley startup from 2011-2016.
