Here’s a suggested reading list for a general background to Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at Cambridge.

If we invite you for interview we don’t expect you to have read all of these books, they are simply provided for those who would like to do some reading.

The following books focus on Chemical Engineering or Biotechnology and are an appropriate level for you to read as a prospective student.

M. Denn, "Chemical Engineering: An Introduction" (Cambridge University Press, 2012)

K. A. Solen & J. N. Harb “Introduction to Chemical Engineering” (Wiley, 2010).
If you've done Year 12  / S5 / Yr13 Northern Ireland in Chemistry this should work for you, though note that it used old-fashioned American units.

R. Renneberg, D. Süßbier, V. Berkling & V. Loroch “Biotechnology for Beginners” (Academic Press, 2023)
This book has more detail than you need, so we encourage you to pick and choose the parts that interest you.

P. Le Couteur & J. Burreson “Napoleon’s Buttons: how 17 molecules changed history” (Penguin, 2004)
