Oliver Johnson, Professor of Information Theory at the University of Bristol, will give the Lady Margaret Lecture - 'Logging the Pandemic'.

He will describe how some simple mathematical ideas helped make sense of pandemic data and why plotting numbers on logarithmic scales enables us to detect the start and end of COVID waves more quickly. In a similar spirit, he will explain how Bayes' theorem allowed us to be confident that positive lateral flow results should be taken seriously and to spot problems with PCR testing in autumn 2021.
