George Taylor Braine

Matriculation year     1853

George Taylor was born in Jamaica and was later ordained under the Church of the Holy Trinity there. He was the son of Charles Braine of Savannah la Mar, Jamaica.

Connection to enslavement

George Taylor's father, Charles Braine of Savanna la Mar in Jamaica,¹ was compensated £343 11s 8d for 17 enslaved people in the parish of Manchester in Jamaica, presumably on the 'Berkshire' estate he owned there.² ³

It is possible that Charles Braine was compensated for enslaved people on other estates across Jamaica, including 48 enslaved people in the parish of Westmorland,⁴ two in St James parish,⁵ and nine in Elizabeth parish.⁶ Further research would be required, however, to ascertain whether the 'Charles Braine' listed as an awardee in these claims - for a total of £1289 19s 3d - was the same 'Charles Braine of Savanna la Mar' who was George Taylor's father (and was awarded compensation for enslaved people on the 'Berkshire' estate in Manchester parish).

His father received compensation at least 17 years before George Taylor matriculated at Christ's, meaning that the wealth financing George Taylor's education was probably derived in part from his father's ownership of enslaved people.
