SECTION 8

ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY

8.1 Energy Efficiency

The major cause of waste and inefficiency is individuals being careless in their behaviour by: leaving lights, computers and other electrical appliances turned on in unoccupied rooms; opening windows rather than turning down heating; turning heating up rather than dressing slightly more warmly etc. In 2006, fuel costs more than doubled, and major savings have to be made by all.

8.2 Refuse Collection

Bedders will clear waste bins on a daily basis. If you have empty cans or bottles please place them in a separate bag or box, so that they can be recycled; please do not mix them with general waste, as we do not have facilities for separating different types of waste.

8.3 The Environment

The College actively seeks to limit damage to the environment through a positive approach to control of pollution and care for the environment, and will meet the obligations under the Environmental Protection Act. The potential for pollution from our activities is assessed and either eliminated or controlled so far as is reasonably practicable. The College is also actively developing an environmental action programme through liaison with the Health, Safety and Domus Committee.

8.4 College Recycling Facilities

As part of the College's environmental policy we have made a commitment to recycle as much waste as possible in the safest possible manner. Recycling facilities in the College are clearly labelled and are available as follows:

Cans

A bin for disposal of cans is provided in the storage area behind the Theatre. Cans from the Buttery will be recycled by the Buttery Staff.

Glass

Bottle banks are located in the in the storage area behind the Theatre. Bottles from the Buttery will be recycled by the Buttery Staff.

Paper

Bins are provided for paper, newspapers and magazines (but not cardboard) in the JCR Rooms, the Porters' Lodge, the Library, the Computer Room, the Tutorial and Admissions Office, and the College administration offices. Two 1100L skips are provided for waste paper in the storage area behind the Theatre.

All students will be provided with a green bag for waste paper recycling every week. The Bedders will collect green bags for recycling once a week, instead of emptying the general waste bins in study bedrooms,

City Council Collections

All College hostels which are serviced by Cambridge City Council are provided with recycling facilities. Residents of these hostels are responsible for ensuring that the bins are used properly, and that they are put out for emptying on the appropriate day of the week. Green and black wheelie bins are emptied fortnightly on alternate weeks. Wheelie bins must not be overfilled, such that the lid will not close. Overfilled bins will not be emptied by the City Council’s contractor. Properties are provided with:

Black Wheelie Bin - for all non-recyclable waste.

Green Wheelie Bin - for recycleable waste - garden waste, cardboard, vegetable peelings etc.

Green Box - for recycleable paper, bottles and cans. (Please note that these items should be separated from each other in the green box.)

Blue Box - for plastic bottles.

Residents must be punctilious in their segregation of recyclable waste, since contamination eg food waste in paper recycling bins, glass bottles in the blue box, will result in that waste not being taken away.
