Following a distinguished diplomatic career, including an appointment as Ambassador in Bonn in 1975, Sir Oliver (m 1939) was pre-elected Master of Christ's in 1982 but was recalled by the Prime Minister and Queen, at the time of the Falklands Conflict, to serve as Ambassador to the United States.
