Charles Blackham Recital Competition

Christ's College Music Society held the second of its annual Recital Competion, ins honour of the Society's late Chairman, Charles Blackham (m. 2007).

The competiion is open to all students of Christ's College, of any standard on any instrument or voice, with the opportunity to perform in front of a panel of judges for the £200 prize.  The judging panel was chaired by Dr David Jones, President of Christ's College, alongside Professor David Rowland, the College's Director of Music, and Kerri-Anne Edinburgh, Chair of CCMS.

The competition was between five candidates who performed an outstanding variety of music from Sigfrid Karg-Elert's Sonata Appassionata for solo flute to an arrangement of a tradition Chinese folk song (deep in the bamboo forest) for the Hulusi (a wind instrument with chanter and two drones).

The candidates were Miranda Pottinger (mezzo sporano), Philip Chen (Hulusi and Bawa), Nathan Hudson-Peacock (B flat and D trumpets) Rosie Bowker (flute) and Zara Reid (clarinet).

After the performances, which took place in the College Chapel, the judges took a break to decide the winner, whilst the audience and candidates enjoyed a wine reception in the antechapel.  Congratulations go to Rosie Bowker as the winner of the Charles Blackham Recital Prize.  The winner was announced by Mrs Sally Blackham, to whom a huge thank you is extended and without whom the competiion would not have come to fruition.

Thank you to everyone who took part for providing us with such a fantastic afternoon, and a special thank you to all those who helped to make the occasion run so smoothly.
