How to deal with unsolicited/junk email

Unsolicited/Junk/Spam/Phising/Scam email is all inconvenient. It takes time to review and delete messages, other times especially in the case of well crafted phising and scam emails your online security can also be put at risk.

The central university email system, hermes, runs several automated systems to delete unwanted email before you even see it.  The level of this can and should be adjusted from the default.

 1. Log in to Hermes, via the webmail interface

Hermes Log in screen

2. Click the "Manage" menu item

Click Manage

3. Click "Junk Email" in the Mail processing section

Click Junk email

4. On the Junk email filtering page, set the Filter threshold to 5. And make sure the purge after box is checked.  Purging after 7 days is recommended.  When you initially activate spam filtering you should check your Junk email folder regularly to ensure no messages are gettting misclassified.  If messages from a certain user continue to get misclassified you can add their email addresses in the Whitelist box, and they will never get marked as Junk.
