College Network Usage Monitor

 College Network Utilisation Monitor (CNUM)

The College provides a system to help students manage their network usage. This system calculates individuals network traffic in 20 minute chunks and emails a warning to the student when 75% of their daily internet allowance is reached. Once the daily quota is used the network connection is limited to the Cambridge network and the student is notified of that fact. The connection will automatically be re-enabled just after midnight when the follow days quota is started.

Network use can be monitored from the College website. A Windows gadget is also available for students who wish to monitor their connection more conveniently.

You are reminded that the daily limit is 1GB per day.Any student who needs to exceed this for academic purposes will need the support from their Tutor, Director of Studies or the Senior Tutor before this can be allowed. This is expected to apply to very few students.

It is important to note that the system cannot control the high rate and volume traffic generated by some video streaming programs (e.g. BBC iPlayer) or Peer-to-Peer software (e.g. bitTorrent).

The threshold after which the internet traffic is regarded as excessive is 2GB in a day. If a student has gone over this limit they will be contacted to ask why this has occurred and remind them of the College network policy.

If the student exceeds the threshold for a second time their network connection will be limited until their Tutor approves their reconnection and are required to pay a £25 fine and wait 7 days for this to happen. A third transgression will result in limiting the connection for the remainder of the year.

Please note that the IT Department has authority to disconnect a computer immediately if gross misuse of the network  has been detected or the system is suspected of having its security compromised.
