Accommodation Handbook Section 8 - Environmental Quality

Index to section 8:

8.1 Energy Efficiency

8.2 Refuse Collection

8.3 The Environment

8.4 Recycling

8.1 Energy Efficiency

Approximately 80% of the energy used by the College is attributable to services provided to its students, e.g. domestic hot water, heating, lighting and use of electricity in student rooms. All students should do what they can to minimise their own energy use.   The major cause of waste and inefficiency is individuals being careless in their behaviour. For example, leaving lights, computers and other electrical appliances turned on in unoccupied rooms; opening windows when the heating is turned on; turning heating up rather than dressing slightly more warmly all wastes energy etc. Energy costs are constantly increasing in excess of the general rate of inflation and RPI.

8.2 Refuse Collection

Bedders will clear waste bins on a daily basis. If you have empty cans or bottles please place them in a separate bag or box, so that they can be recycled; please do not mix them with general waste, as we do not have facilities for separating different types of waste. Do not put broken glass into your waste bin, as this creates a hazrd for your bedder.

8.3 The Environment

The College actively seeks to limit damage to the environment through a positive approach to control of pollution and care for the environment, and will meet the obligations under the Environmental Protection Act. The potential for pollution from our activities is assessed and either eliminated or controlled so far as is reasonably practicable. The College is also actively developing an environmental action programme through liaison with the Health, Safety and Domus Committee.

8.4 College Recycling Facilities

As part of the College's environmental policy we have made a commitment to recycle as much waste as possible in the safest possible manner. Recycling facilities in the College are clearly labelled. Some staircases have local recycling facilities where there is sufficient space.

Bins are provided for paper, newspapers and magazines (but not cardboard) in the JCR Rooms, the Porters' Lodge, the Library, the Computer Room, some staircases (where there is sufficient space), the Tutorial and Admissions Office, and the College administration offices. Two 1100L skips are provided for waste paper in the storage area behind the Theatre.

City Council Collections

All College hostels which are serviced by Cambridge City Council are provided with recycling facilities. Residents of these hostels are responsible for ensuring that the bins are used properly, and that they are put out for emptying on the appropriate day of the week. Green+ blue+paper caddy and black wheelie bins are emptied fortnightly on alternate weeks. Wheelie bins must not be overfilled, such that the lid will not close. Overfilled bins will not be emptied by the City Council's contractor. Properties are provided with:

Black Wheelie Bin - for all non-recyclable waste.

Green Wheelie Bin - for recycleable waste - garden waste, food waste, vegetable peelings etc. Food waste should be wrapped in newspaper, not just thrown in the bin.

Blue Caddy - for all recycleable paper

Blue Wheelie Bin - for all plastic, glass, and cardbooard

Residents must be punctilious in their segregation of recyclable waste, since contamination eg food waste in paper recycling bins, glass bottles in the green bin, will result in that waste not being taken away and possibly a fine or other charges being raised by the City Council.
