Cecil Courtney works on French and comparative literature, intellectual history and bibliography, with with special emphasis on the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He has written widely on Montesquieu, Burke, Raynal, Isabelle de Charrière, James Boswell and Benjamin Constant.
