Ruth PADEL Poet in Residence (Leverhulme Trust)

Ruth Padel is a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Literature and Zoological Society of London, and currently Resident Poet at Christ's College, Cambridge.  She was born in London, studied Classics at Oxford, lived several years in Greece and worked as a Greek scholar before becoming a freelance writer.  She has been Chair of the Poetry Society, and Writer in Residence at the BBC Proms and Somerset House.  Her awards include First Prize in the National Poetry Competition, a Cholmeley Award from the Society of Authors and an Arts Council of England Writers' Award.  She has published seven collections of poetry (several shortlisted for the T S Eliot Prize), most recently Darwin - A Life in Poems.  Her non-fiction includes I'm a Man, a study of rock music and Greek myth; Tigers in Red Weather, a highly acclaimed nature book on conservation; and two much-loved books on reading modern poetry, most recently The Poem and the Journey.  She is a great great grand-0daughter of Charles Darwin.
