CHRIST'S COLLEGE STAFF HANDBOOK

SECTION 1 - INTRODUCTION

1. Your Contract of Employment is the agreement that defines the mutual obligations that exist between you and the College - what you receive from the College in return for doing your job.

2. Your Job Description describes more precisely what you have to do to perform your job in the right way and to the required standard.

3. The General Terms and Conditions of Employment describe the policies of the College with regard to matters affecting your working environment and from an integral part of your Contract of Employment. They are defined in this Staff Handbook which also states the College's policies on a number of other, important issues. Some of these are the result of new legislation and others are College conventions and practices that have been in place for years.

4. The HR Manager or your Head of Department will have supplied you with copies of your contract of Employment and your Job Description. You should not sign them until you are sure that you fully understand them. If you are in any doubt, you should discuss them with either your Head of Department or, if necessary, the HR Manager.

5. It is important for you to understand all your terms and conditions of employment. If, therefore, you have any questions - on the facts or on matters of interpretation - in relation to any of these documents, at any time, you should ask your Head of Department, the HR Manager or the Assistant to the Director of College Services . Any one of them will be very pleased to help.

6. The Handbook is not exhaustive. The College is consistently revising its terms and conditions of employment, and its policies, so that they both comply with current legislation and reflect best practice in similar institutions. When appropriate, amendments will be made to reflect changes in both legislation and best practice.

7. It is assumed that you have fulfilled your obligation to understand your Contract of Employment, Job Description and the Staff Handbook.

COLLEGE PERSONNEL OFFICER

8. The Bursar is the College Personnel Officer and is responsible to the Governing Body for general oversight of the policies and procedures described in this Handbook. The Bursar also sits on the Wages Committee. The Wages Committee meets once a year, in Easter Term, to review staff salaries and wages, and at any other time, as necessary, to discuss employment matters as they arise.
