The aims of the College, as specified by its Statutes, are to promote Education, Religion, Learning and Research. In 2009 the College interprets these aims as follows:
Education
Christ's College aims to admit to its membership students with the motivation and the intellectual ability to benefit from the education provided by the College and the University, regardless of their background. The College provides teaching, support (including pastoral care) and cultural, social, recreational and sporting facilities to help its members to realise their potential in scholarship, and other fields.
Religion
Christ's College acknowledges amongst its members a wide range of religious and other beliefs. It aims to carry forward the tradition, maintained since its foundation, of being a place of reflection on religious, ethical and philosophical questions. The College maintains the Chapel as a place of religious worship, cultural activity and pastoral support, enriched by the Anglican liturgical and choral traditions.
Learning
Christ's College aims to be an integrated community of students, fellows, staff and alumni that encourages adventurous thinking and scholarship in all the disciplines, and across the disciplines. It aims to cultivate knowledge and understanding, within its walls and without, and to disseminate them among the resident members of the College, its alumni, and the wider community.
Research
Christ's College aims to promote research by providing outstanding young academics with research and teaching fellowships. It also provides a working environment in which all fellows, graduate students and senior undergraduates can pursue their research interests to the benefit of their field, and of society as a whole.
"I will point ye out the right path of a virtuous and noble Education; laborious indeed at the first ascent, but else so smooth, so green, so full of goodly prospect, and melodious sounds on every side, that the Harp of Orpheus was not more charming."
from John Milton, Of Education, 1644
