November has been a very busy month in the life of Christ's College Chapel with three significant and separate events to continue to celebrate the five hundredth anniversary of the Chapel's consecration in 1510.
On Saturday 14 November, over 100 former choir members and choral scholars gathered for a reunion Evensong and dinner to launch Christ's College Choir Association. Music included Howells Te Deum, Stanford in C Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis and Brahms How Lovely are thy dwellings. At the launch dinner in Hall, the Master and the Director of Music, David Rowland gave speeches. The Master thanked David Rowland for over 25 years of continuing service to the Choir and College. Details of the Choir Association can be found here.
On Friday 19 November, our alumnus and Honorary Fellow, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, joined leading British poets, Ruth Padel and Jo Shapcott, for a Quincentenary poetry reading, entitled Where prayer has been valid; meditating on the relevance of spirituality for a secular age. A recording of the event will be made available very shortly.
The feast of Christ the King, on Sunday 21 November saw the final Festal Orchestral Evensong of the year, with a sermon (reflecting on the Caro statue of 'The Deposition' in the ante-chapel) from the Bishop of Huntingdon, the Rt Revd Dr David Thomson. His sermon can be read here. This service saw the premiere performance of I am the Alpha and Omega by Kerri-Ann Edinburgh, second year Music student at Christ's, as the introit for the service. Music also included Handel's Let thy hand be strengthened and J C Bach's Magnificat, both with string accompaniment.
