It was a great pleasure to welcome Canon Pattison back to Cambridge to preach on the subject 'Lady Margaret 1509 and 2009: Faith, knowledge and the end of an era'” said Revd Christopher Woods, Chaplain of Christ’s College and Director of Studies in Theology. “Professor Pattison is a very valued theologian and he holds one of the most valuable and sought-after Professorships in the world.  Previous holders include Archbishop Rowan Williams and the late John Macquarrie".

Canon Pattison’s sermon was the second in a series of events, with visiting preachers including the Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity at

Cambridge
/> />, Professor Judith Lieu who will give a sermon at Trinity College Chapel on Sunday, 7 June. Dr Susan O’Brien, the Principal of the Margaret Beaufort Institute of Theology will preach on Sunday 24 May at Christ’s College Chapel and the noted Christian Historian Professor Eamonn Duffy will preach at a special Solemn Evensong on Saturday 27 June.

Music on 27 June will include some rarely-performed music from the Eton Choir Book, a richly-illuminated collection of English sacred music, compiled between 1500 and 1505, and one of only a very few such musical collections to survive the Reformation.  The music will be performed by Christ’s College Chapel Choir, under the direction of Professor David Rowland. 

Christ’s College will also host a day of special lectures, events and small exhibitions to celebrate the legacy of Margaret Beaufort on Saturday 27 June.  Guest speakers include David Starkey and Professor Lisa Jardine and there will be an appearance from the actor, Penelope Keith.

Lady Margaret Beaufort died 500 years ago this June. During her life she founded Christ’s College in 1505 and left instruction for the development of what was to become

St John’s
/> College
/> />in 1511. She also endowed two Professorships of Divinity, one at
Oxford
/>and one at Cambridge
/>
/>.

Choral Evensong in Christ’s College Chapel begins at 6.00pm each Sunday. All are welcome and refreshments are available following the service.
