Clare Novice Regatta took place from 28-28 November 2009. Christ's had four novice boats entered.

Men's Novice 1st VIII Fairbairns 2009-10
Girton A
Lost - 1 1/2 lengths

The crew was confident about today’s race coming off a good week of training with some excellent practice starts and solid water time. The row down the Reach to marshal for the race bolstered our confidence, as it was some of our best paddling yet, and our practice starts were smooth as well. Our race against Girton was the first of the division, so we hadn’t much time to wait before being called to the starting line.

Our start was quite solid, and it pulled us out to a slight lead over Girton within our first ten strokes. Girton, rowing well themselves, pulled back even as we came out of our start sequence and began to open a slight lead a couple of hundred meters into the course, when chaos struck. Girton drifted slightly towards Christ’s racing lane, and a crab in their crew drove them sharply into our line. Nearly simultaneously, Christ’s caught a grab as well, driving us towards the oncoming Girton boat and creating a nice jam which caused both crews to momentarily stop rowing. Girton came out of the mess upstream of Christ’s and carried on rowing much more quickly. By the time Christ’s straightened and resumed a rhythm up the course, Girton had a couple of lengths of open water.

We rowed the remainder of the course fiercely, but the deficit proved too much, as Girton held us at a distance through the finish, winning by a length and a half. The result is disappointing, largely because the crew has been rowing very soundly as of late and maintained that in the race, aside from a single bit of carnage. We take away the consolation that we lost to a very good Girton crew, which made it through to the finals of the draw, and that if we maintain the progress evident today, we will enjoy the results of Fairbairns in only a few days’ time.

Men's Novice 2nd VIII Fairbairns 2009-10 , Race 1
Selwyn D
Won - 3 lengths

Despite a slightly panicked start that led to initially being behind, the crew's cohesion and rhythm allowed them to take that back and go on to win convincingly - an excellent start to the competition and a great first ever race.

Men's Novice 2nd VIII Fairbairns 2009-10 , Race 2
FaT C
Lost - canvas

A slight change to the planned start led to a much smoother beginning to the race, with Christ's pulling away as the faster crew. However, a minor bank collision and some crabs meant that ground was lost, leading to an eventual loss, showing how down to luck novice racing can be.

However, every time they fell behind, strong pushes and superior rowing allowed them to take the lead again, and at the pace the gap was closing coming up to the finish, another 50m could easily have turned the result.

Overall, I'm massively pleased with the guys' achievements and believe this bodes well for a successful Fairbairns.

Women's Novice 1st VIII Fairbairns 2009-10 , Race 1
Madgelene NW1
Won- easily

Christ's had a tidy start and strode to a good rhythm; within the first minute of the race they had established a good lead which was lengthened by Madgelene crashing in to the bank! We stayed strong throughout the race and won easily, setting us up well for the rest of the day's racing.

Women's Novice 1st VIII Fairbairns 2009-10 , Race 2
LMBC NW1
Won- 2 lengths

Prepared for a harder race than before, we started well but lost a few metres. Throughout the first two minutes of the race, both crews were evenly matched. A big push from Christ's gained us half a length and we continued to push through LMBC until we had clear water 100m from the Railway bridge. The girls held strong despite pressure from LMBC and won the race by 2 lengths after dominating last section of the race!

Women's Novice 1st VIII Fairbairns 2009-10 , Race 3
Queen's NW1
Won- 3 lengths

Again we had a good race start and were immediately moving up on Queens. 20s in to the race Queen's were blown in the bank by strong winds. We kept strong up until the Railway bridge where disaster struck for us too as we were blown in to the bank. Fortunately, Mary helped a speedy recovery by pushing the boat back out and we did a restart in time to prevent Queen's from gaining too much on us and took with race on to the line to win by three lengths.

Women's Novice 1st VIII Fairbairns 2009-10 , Race 4
Jesus NW1
Lost- half a length

Jesus had a good start which put them ahead. Christ's lost ground through the fist half of the race until Jesus had clear water. A tiring Jesus in the second half of the race where ground down by a determined Christ's crew who could quite catch them before the line. Otherwise a solid row with a good rhythm and rate which will be sustainable for Fairbairns putting us in good stead. Congratulations to the Jesus crew who beat us by pushing hard off the start and hanging on until the end.
