Not a good race today. We found an alright rhythm off the start, but as the race progressed we struggled to pick up the water at the catch, leading to a short and tugged stroke. We were caught by both the Girton and Robinson crews behind, and the overall results reflected our poor performance. Not long left to bumps now, but we're confident we can row much better than today suggested.

Unfortunately this week our crew suffered a setbacks, with Hannah being rushed in to hospital. She should be OK, but sadly she won't be able to row for the rest of term, which is a great shame - we'll miss you Hannah! Luckily our regular super-sub was keen to sub in, and so we managed to just get on with it.

The starts on our row down were a little bit shaky, and it took a few attempts for us to get the feeling of the strong and loose draw strokes that we'd been focusing on during the week. However, our actual start was good and we settled to roughly rate 32/33 (problems with the rate meter on the cox box...). We were set off behind Caius W1, which provided us with a great focus for pushes. As aresult, our row was really gutsy, with great commitment when asked for it by Katie. Many thanks to Katie for subbing in as well! However, from this race we've learnt that we need to put a bit of thought into maintaining a really strong rhythm and staying in range when at high rating and tired. I'm really happy with the result though, and can't wait for Pembroke Regatta, where we'll get the chance to really match ourselves aginst other crews...

After a slight rush last weekend getting down for Newnham Short Course, we arrived to marshal rather on the early side this week; and so had a nice sit on the bank in the sunshine to compose ourselves mentally for this week's longer race. After a good row down (and some slightly scary spinning near the lock) we set off with a reasonable start.

This time we managed to keep the rate down and the whole race felt a lot less rushed than last weekend's, which was a good improvement. There were some good pushes into and out of corners and on the reach, though as ever we need to concentrate on not only maintaining technique put keeping the power on full the whole time and not only when reminded!

The finishing line position was not quite known and was generally expected about 300m before it actually was. This lead to a slightly dying off just after the railway bridge, however there was some revitalisation as everyone gave their best in the last 150m to the finish.

Beating three W2 and a two W1 crews made for an good race outcome and now has everyone more prepared for the similar length Getting-On race in a fortnight.
