Welcome to the Christ's College Boat Club (CCBC) website. In 1830, the Boat Club was founded, at which time only a few of the Colleges had clubs. In 1887 the Boathouse was built in its present position.
Below you will find news articles of recent club activity. Follow the links down the right hand sidebar or along the top bar to find more information about the club or use the search.

Blades London Event

Friday 5th March 2010

The Blades will once again be meeting in Central London for an evening drink and food. The last event proved very popular, and it is hoped that even more members will be able to attend this year.

Further details will be available shortly, but keep the date free in your diary.

Winter Head 2009-10

The Winter Head, a 2500m race from the A14 by-pass to the former Penny Ferry pub, takes place this Saturday. Christ's will be represented in the race by our M1, W1, M2 & W2 crews. Also competing under the Champion of the Thames banner is the Fellows & Grads VIII. The racing goes on all day with different crews racing at different times. All support from the bank would be most welcome.

Coaching Assistance sought!

Having recently heard of enormous success at Emmanuel College Boat Club with an appeal to old members for coaching assistance, we have ourselves decided to make a similar appeal. It seems that many people are enjoying a return to their old haunts, either for a weekend or sometimes an entire fortnight (with certain individuals vigorously defending ‘their’ two week stint finishing a particular crew...!). For others who live in or around Cambridge it may be possible to coach quite frequently and to become even more involved if desired.

Novices throw themselves in at the deep end…

The novice rowing effort at Christ’s for this autumn is off to both a quick and promising start. With a furious recruiting effort throughout college by Boat Club members both past and present, we had dozens of new Christ’s students come down to the Boathouse over Freshers’ Week to meet Jack and Jack-O, enjoy a 500m erg test, and spend some quality time in the tub with Alasdair Docwra, who graciously spent a four-day ‘holiday’ on the Cam tubbing new rowers.

News from the Women's Captain

The women’s boat club had a remarkably successful Easter term, starting with a win for W1 in the first race of term, The Radegund Mile. This set up the crew for a term of domination, going on to win both the Head to Head and Head of the Cam, and coming a close second in the last major race before May Bumps, Champs Eights Head. W1 benefitted from two rowers returning from a year with CUW.

News from the Captain of Boats

May Term ‘09:

Last May term ended up as a very successful one for the boat club, with the college finishing 6th in the Pegasus Cup for May Bumps results, but there were certainly rocky times along the way.

The term began promisingly, with a good collection of students entered into the Small Boats Regatta. Eddie Surtees and Mary Bjorkegren provided the stand out performance, as they won the Women’s Magdalene Silver Pairs in convincing fashion.

Farewell from Kat Astley

With a bit of a tear in my eye it’s time to let you all know that with effect from 22nd December 2009 I shall no longer be the Boatman of Christ’s College Boat Club. It’s been a big decision, but it’s time to move on. And of course there is never a ‘right time’ for such a decision; I’ve anguished about the fact I shall miss the new Boathouse coming to fruition, I shan’t be in post when our University Triallists race their Boat Races in 2010, and I have already pushed out my last set of May Bumps.

Queens Ergs 2009-10

This Tuesday evening (10th November) our novices will be taking part in their first competition - the indoor erg (rowing machine) competition in which each member of the crew rows 500 metres in succession and the cumulative time of the crew is compared to other crews from all the Colleges. It is run and hosted by Queens' College. There is always a strong contingent of supporters and a guarantee of cheesy music so if you can, please do come and support our novices. The competition starts in the early evening and runs all night.

Women's 2nd Division University Fours - WIN!!

Just a few lines to congratulate Flo’s Four on their win this afternoon at Uni IVs. Obviously we’re proud of all our crews, but I wanted to mention this race in particular because it was such a good example of how not to panic! Great for everyone to witness but should be particularly inspiring for all our novices.

Peterborough Training Weekend

Over the weekend of 31st October/1st November, we took a number of crews to Peterborough rowing lake for an off-Cam training camp. Despite frequent bursts of heavy rain, and some strong winds on Sunday, the weekend was very successful, and a great benefit to all who attended.
