From its foundation in 1505, Christ's College has depended on the generosity of far-sighted individuals. Our foundress, Lady Margaret Beaufort, established the College with endowments of property drawn from her own estate. Over the following five centuries, members and friends of the College who wish to see it prosper have made generous benefactions. More recently, alumni and other friends of the College supported the Quincentenary Campaign which reached its target of £15 million in June 2008. Thank you to all those who supported this initiative.
Our challenge remains to keep strengthening our financial position. We need to compete within Cambridge and internationally for the best students, staff and Fellows and maintain and improve our facilities. We are committed to providing a first-rate education to our students and providing opportunities for research that has global reach. Christ's is also keen to provide opportunities for extra-curricular activities in areas such as music, drama and sport. Even in this difficult economic climate we are looking to the future and continuing to take opportunities to develop the College.
Currently more than half our annual income comes from donations or from endowment income, showing the importance of financial support to the College. Income from fees is restricted by the Government for UK and EU undergraduates and does not reflect the cost of providing event the tuition for our students, so we must seek ways of increasing our income from other sources. The College is working hard to control its cost base but there are many cases where the costs are rising outside our control, such as pensions and legislative requirements.
Continuing support from our alumni and friends is therefore essential to ensure that Christ’s will successfully meet the challenges that lie ahead and continue to offer an outstanding education to the most able young people, regardless of background.

Having had the opportunity to represent Cambridge, and race against Oxford, at the Henley Boat Races was an incredible experience. The journey to the boat race was of course hugely testing physically, but was also a substantial burden financially. I am extremely grateful for the financial support I received from College which greatly eased this strain, and without which it certainly would have been more difficult to concentrate on achieving to the highest of my ability.
