Earl Mountbatten of
Burma
(1900-1979)
British Admiral of the Fleet and statesman, Louis Mountbatten was the great-grandson of Queen
Victoria
. In the Second World War, he was appointed chief of Combined Operations Command, playing a key role in the preparations for the D-Day landings. As Supreme Commander,
South East Asia
, he successfully defeated the Japanese offensive into
India
and received the Japanese surrender at
Singapore
. He served as
Britain
's last Viceroy of India, and subsequently held a series of top positions in the British Armed Forces, including Chief of the Defence Staff.
